Unlike many giant mugs of watered-down, super-sweet, and sometimes fizzy margaritas that are often served in restaurants around the world today.

Frequently asked questions about MARGARITY

What does Margaret mean?

Margarita is Spanish for "daisy". ♡

Where do margaritas come from?

We owe the richness of Mexican gastronomy and drinking culture to this famous sweet and sour cocktail. Historians debate the exact origins of the drink (you can read some of the more well-known origin stories here and here). But it gained popularity in the United States during Prohibition, when many Americans traveled to Mexico to drink and fall in love with the local tequila. And today, the margarita is one of the most popular cocktails in the world.

How are margaritas traditionally served?

Unlike the tall, watered-down margarita cups served in many restaurants around the world today, margaritas are traditionally served as strong cocktails in a salt-rimmed margarita glass. (Note: the following recipe is a strong cocktail version!)

When Is National Margarita Day?

February 22nd, so put what you want to celebrate on your calendar!

MARGARET INGREDIENTS

To make the best margarita mix, you really only need three basic margarita ingredients:

Tequila: Silver or Reposado has traditionally been considered the best tequila for a margarita, but any type of tequila (or smoked mezcal or sotol) will do.

Fresh Squeezed Lime Juice: For the best fresh taste, I highly recommend squeezing your own lime juice rather than using store-bought lime juice. I swear by this juicer, it makes juicing easy and especially useful when you're preparing a large batch.

Orange Liqueur: Cointreau is my favorite, but Grand Marnier is delicious too, or you can use a quality triple sec.

We also invite you to add:

Agave: If you want to sweeten your margarita, I recommend adding agave syrup (or plain syrup, or any sweetener) to taste.

Kosher Salt: If you want to salt the rims of your glasses, place a lime wedge on top, then dip in coarse Kosher salt or margarita salt. (I also like to add a little tajín to my salt for that extra lime-chili effect.)

Extra Lime Wedges/Slices: Save a few extra lime wedges or wedges for when you want to add them to your drink as a garnish.

HOW TO MAKE A MARGARITA SWEATER

Detailed instructions are in the recipe below, but here's a quick rundown of how to make margaritas from a pitcher:

  • Prepare your glasses: If you wish to salt the rims of your glasses, simply place a juicy lime around them, then dip in coarse Kosher salt. Set the jars aside until ready to use.
  • Combine Ingredients in Large Pitcher: Combine tequila, lime juice, orange liqueur, and a handful of ice in large pitcher and stir.
  • Give it a try and add sweetener if you like: give your margarita some flavor and if you feel it needs extra sweetening add a tablespoon or two of agave nectar (or regular syrup) at a time, until the drink reaches the desired sweetness.
Serve over ice.Place a few ice cubes (or I often use a large ice cube so it melts more slowly) in each serving glass, then pour the margarita mixture over ice and decorate each cup with a slice of lemon.

POSSIBLE VARIATIONS TO THE RECIPE

There's no limit to the different types of margaritas you can make, but here are some of my favorite simple modifications you can make to this classic margarita recipe:

  • Make Mezcal Margaritas: At our house, we especially love making margaritas with mezcal (or sotol) instead of tequila, which gives this cocktail the most delicious, smoky, and complex flavor. . However, if you just want a slightly smoky margarita, try a 50/50 mix of tequila and mezcal.
  • Make a Flavorful Margarita: If you want your margarita to be flavorful, try tossing a few slices of fresh jalapeño or serrano peppers into the margarita mix. However, remember that a few slices of peppers are enough for one serving. So I recommend starting with a slice or two and then you can always add more if you want to add a flavorful margarita recipe.
  • Make a "Lean" Margarita: If you're looking to cut some calories (and alcohol content), try substituting orange liqueur for freshly squeezed orange juice to make a lean margarita. They always taste great!
  • How to Make a Virgin Margarita: Here is my favorite virgin margarita recipe.
  • Customize Salt Rim: I also like tossing the Tajín with coarse salt for a crispier salt rim with chili and lime. Or if you prefer it sweet and savory, you can mix granulated sugar (or any other type of sugar) with the salt.

Make a Pitcher of Margaritas (Serves 16)

Combine tequila, orange liqueur, lime juice, and a handful of ice in a large pitcher until smooth. Add sweeteners as desired until the margaritas reach your preferred sweetness level. Serve over ice and garnish each glass with an additional lime wedge, if desired.
